OP25. Thiamine is a boy's best friend...

A malnourished fellow from Nottingham
Was named Barry Barry--a tautonym.
Since B1 was off in his
   Food, an homophonous
Plight (beriberi) was fraught in him.

March is National Nutrition Month, so I wanted to hurry to post this one before it is over. Readers concerned about the pronunciation of Nottingham are referred to the Comment section. Brave blog viewers who wish to examine a diet suggested by The Limericist should see his Post #568 of February 24.

  1. No prob. with "Nottingham." I might, however, suggest 'an' rather than 'a' as the article for 'homophonous.' Overall, I give your tautonymic lim'ric' a big Muppet "Wauka Wauka!"

  2. Precedent for the rhyming of "Nottingham" with "tautonym" is provided in the following example from The Limerick by Gershon Legman (#788 in the section "Gourmands"). NOTE: It is a naughty one and needs to be in red ink.

There once was a baker of Nottingham
Who in making éclairs would put snot in 'em.
When he ran out of snot,
    He would, like as not,
Take his pecker and jack off a shot in 'em.

As for the use of the word tautonym, strictly it refers only to zoological genus and species names which are identical, e.g., Rattus rattus,
Gorilla gorilla, Bison bison. With the blessing of Anu Garg of "A Word A Day," it may also apply to proper names, as Sirhan Sirhan or Ford Madox Ford. Internet usage extends even to place names or common nouns--Walla Walla, couscous.

Beriberi is serious, but it can be cured with an allegro açai...
